The drive for diversity at elite universities and the resurgence of Black Greek letter organizations in the 1980’s created an almost transcendent convergence. The result was a glorious era for Black Greeks on predominantly white campuses. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc, Theta Iota Chapter, a gifted assembly of men from Tufts University, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; demonstrated excellence within an environment of excellence. Chapter became celebrities on the Atlantic seaboard.
With the 80’s backdrop of cultural and community milestones like the founding of BET network, Jesse Jackson’s bid for President, Prince’s Purple Rain, Reginald Lewis becoming the first Black CEO, and MLK birthday granted a national holiday, in the orefront were the TI Nupes impacting their communities, influencing campus culture, battling racism, defying stereotypes, and building legacy.
Cream of the Crop, a documentary, depicts the extraordinary and challenging college journeys of Theta Iota chapter, during this golden decade, and how these experiences continue to shape their lives today.
